Sarah Wimperis

I hope to capture the light and mood of the places that I know intimately. It is as if by painting I am trying to hold on to a moment in time, the fleeting sparkle of sunlight on glass, light through dusty windows, the brilliance of velvet in a dark room, a long lost memory of a time or place suddenly reappearing. My paintings are tiny slivers of the life that surrounds me, documented before they disappear from view. Drawing, painting and creating images of the world around me are fundamental to my experience of life.

I began painting at a very early age due to family influences and an inability to spell. Ran away to sea in 1978 to study Fine Art at Falmouth School of Art, graduated with a degree in 1981. Exhibited with the Portal Gallery, travelled the world, painting all the way, to China, Russia, Israel and finally settled in Norway for 6 years. Then taught, (art of course). Returned to Cornwall, raised a lot of children, painted murals for a while then became a professional illustrator.
I am a traditional figurative artist, I paint plein air in oils or watercolour. Larger studio paintings are completed using plein air reference.
Whatever the medium I hope to capture the light and mood of places that I know intimately. It is as if by paintings I am trying to hold onto a moment in time, the fleeting sparkle of sunlight on glass, light through dusty windows, the brilliance of velvet in a dark room, a long lost memory of a time or place suddenly reappearing. My paintings are tiny slivers of the life that surrounds me, documented before they disappear from view. Drawing, painting and creating images of the world around me are fundamental to my experience of life.
