I gather inspiration through travel and visiting new places, drawn to domestic subject matter; complex interiors, markets and gardens. Whatever the medium I hope to capture the light and mood of places that I know intimately. It is as if by painting I am trying to hold onto a moment in time, the fleeting sparkle of sunlight on glass, light through dusty windows, the brilliance of velvet in a dark room, a long lost memory of a time or place suddenly reappearing. My paintings are tiny slivers of the life that surrounds me, documented before they disappear from view. Drawing, painting and creating images of the world around me are fundamental to my experience of life."
Born into a family with artistic roots, Sarah Wimperis began painting at a very early age. After studying Fine Art at Falmouth School of Art and graduating with a degree in Sculpture in 1981, Sarah began exhibiting her work and travelled the world, painting all the way. She spent some time living and teaching art in Norway and France before returning to the UK and settling back in Cornwall.
Sarah lives and works on the Helford. She has adapted a van into her own unique mobile studio that enables her to spend her time travelling, teaching and painting across the UK and Europe. Her work is painted en plein air in oils or watercolour, with larger work using plein air references and completed in her studio. She is a keen sketchbook keeper and has recently begun releasing these exquisite books, with each page an original painting, as final works in themselves.
Alongside her painting, Sarah has had a very successful career as an illustrator, working for clients such as the BBC and the National Trust. She has recently returned from working in Gdansk, Poland, as one of the artist/animators on the highly anticipated film 'Loving Vincent' - the first fully painted feature film, telling the story of Vincent Van Gogh and due to be released in the UK Autumn 2017.
In 2016, Sarah illustrated and wrote two books about painting: 'Quick Draw - Urban Landscapes' and 'Quick Draw - People'. Copies available through the gallery.
Sarah has exhibited with Beside The Wave since 2008 and is represented exclusively by their galleries in Cornwall and London.
