Ruth King

Ruth King

Ruth King was brought up in Heartfordshire. She trained at Camberwell School of Arts and Craft in 70's, briefly living in London, and visiting Japan inbetween her degrees.
Inspired by objects in her studio, such as pheasant's breast bone, glass retort and lead worker's wooden former, Ruth creates swelling, assymetrical forms, describing her work as holding implied energy between the rim and the foot of each piece. She fires her kiln up to 6 times a year, using technique of Salt-firing, in which the pots are sprayed with thin layers of colouring oxide that will react to the salt and to their position in the kiln, in relation to the flame. The resultant gentle modulations in colour and tone enhance the swelling forms and create new visual interplays in colour and tone, as irregular as the form it is enveloping.
