Biography

Biography

Amanda Hoskin was born and grew up in Cornwall. After finishing art school she became a freelance wildlife illustrator. However working and living in London, she began to miss Cornwall and so in the early 90's decided to become a sailing instructor, teaching mainly at Mylor on the beautiful Fal Estuary through the summer months and travelling in the winter. During this time she continued to paint, changing the medium from watercolour to oils. Her style became much freer and she began to concentrate on the changing skies and landscapes around her.
Towards the end of the 90's Amanda decided to return to painting full time and with the birth of her little girl, Hannah, she and her partner settled in the very picturesque town of Fowey where she lives and works today.
Amanda Hoskin is one of the leading exponents of modern impressionism in Cornwall and her collection for the 2011 Contemporary Impressionism season at Beside The Wave is a testament to her gifts as a landscape painter. The focus of the show is the Helford River, a part of the world that, in this collection, Amanda has painted for the very first time.
Painting outdoors, in the tradition of the Impressionists, Amanda is masterful in capturing the momentary and transient effects of light, not through line and contour, but in thick brushstrokes of paint which create the 'impression' of the landscape before her.' -

Statement

"As ever, I find that getting started is the hardest part of creating a new body of work, but the more I paint, the more freely ideas flow and the more I feel that I can relax into the process. As I paint, everything else gets held at bay and only the painting matters; I am completely 'there' and in the moment, and the challenges of day to day life simply melt away. In this way the collection grows organically, and in time I sense that a body of work that genuinely belongs together is being created."
