Sarah Wimperis: Light and Heat

Sarah is a contemporary impressionist painter and illustrator, based on Cornwall's Helford River and one of the leading artists with the Beside the Wave galleries.

A testament to her skill and expertise, Sarah was the only English artist to work on the ground breaking animation 'LovingVincent', the world's first fully painted feature film which brings the paintings and subjects of Vincent van Gogh to life to tell his remarkable story. She was selected from thousands of hopeful artists following a rigorous recruitment process which culminated in 18 days of intensive painting expereince in van Gogh's painting style and in painting-animation. Every one of the 62,450 frames of the film is an oil-painting, hand-painted by a team of 125 professional artists who have travelled from all over the world to the Loving Vincent studios in Poland and Greece to be a part of the production. Over the course of five months, working twelve hour days, Sarah painted three hundred and eighty frames using the colours and techniques that Van Gogh himself would have used.

"Such an intense experience is bound to affect your work", says Sarah, "and I think we all felt Vincent was inside our heads. Certainly I'm finding it very easy to devote long hours to painting and I know my brushwork and colour skills improved. I also believe that his dogged pursuit of his own artistic voice, in the face of all opposition, has helped me to believe in myself as an artist.

The year after her intensive painting course in Poland Sarah spent some time in the summer visiting some of the places that Van Gogh himself had painted during his years in France. Inspired by the landscapes, gardens, colours and sun she completely immersed herself in painting for nearly 2 months producing this glorious collection of work - 'Light and Heat'.

Beside the Wave director Ingrid Heseltine says, Sarah has been reassembling her private relationship with France after channeling Vincent van Gogh for so long. She's spent the summer seeing afresh the landscapes that are familiar to her, but through the expressive 'lens' of Van Gogh's paintings - the way in which he represented the characters and the landscape around him. The work she has produced is, in our view, some of her best yet.

The UK Premiere of 'Loving Vincent' was broadcast live from The National Gallery on the 9th October and is now open in cinemas.

We hope you can join us for a special evening here at Beside The Wave and The Poly, Falmouth.
