Impression, Form, Rediscovery

An exciting group show featuring new paintings by Martha Holmes & Ruth Watkinson. We are delighted to be introducing Julia Florence's ceramics to the gallery.

Simplicity, in its most reverent and sacred form seems to hold centre stage in the work of all three of our artists for this upcoming show. Ruth Watkinson, Julia Florence and Martha Holmes all studied at Falmouth University and have undeniably been inspired by their time spent in this part of the world. These three female artists have a preoccupation with light, landscape and organic form; using their surroundings as a way of feeding an art practice that is continuously evolving yet grounded in a strong earthly manner.

Ruth's ephemeral paintings depict scenes in landscape with a lightness of touch that allows the delicacy of the imagery to permeate slowly within the viewer. This slowness of pace is crucial to the way in which she approaches making work. In order to become emotionally invested in the experience she is trying to depict, first she must slow down long enough to be fully present. As a result, the every day is elevated to a station of divinity. Watkinson encourages the viewer to turn from the chaos of modern life and instead inhale deeply all that the mundane midweek can offer us-this is reinforced with her focus on returning to painting from life. The pictorial space whether landscape or still life, is driven so heavily by emotionalism you cannot help but have an evocative response to the work. The brevity of mark making is expressive and yet resolved, with a quiet confidence she can usher us into her dynamic paintings which represent life in motion, wrapped beautifully into a singular picture plane.

With an emphasis on gesture and form, Julia Florence's ceramic vessels sit serenely in their surroundings. The clay which Julia works with is bought and sourced near her home on the North Coast of Cornwall, with the clay pit overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. This allows the artist to have a direct relationship with the material she is creating with. The artisanal craftsmanship is just as relevant as the polished and delicate final touches, the work exists in balance, in harmony with both natural forms and the interference of the human hand. The vessels themselves are hand thrown with brush mark details seemingly, haphazardly executed afterwards. Yet as a collection of work, these gestural interventions are not haphazard, the marks move fluidly across the forms in an informed oceanic manner. The sparing nature of the marks allow the vessels to be self explanatory, sitting with their own autonomous presence, each pot has it's own personality, it's own unique energy which is released and rediscovered every time she throws. The existence of the brush marks act as a way in for the viewer, a relationship between hand and mark which is impeccably translated into a visual whole. The combination of the natural world and the female body act as pivotal starting points for Florence; with their honest integrity, her works are a true visual culmination of balance, simplicity and individuality.

Martha Holmes is a plein-air painter and designer who lives and works in Falmouth. Her intimate oil paintings are a combination of still life and landscape scenes with expressive brush strokes rendering works within which light is the pivotal factor. The heritage of Cornwall for Martha is important and her relationship with place is obvious in her depictions of flora or fauna found in specific locations along the coastline. Holmes has a purposeful air about the way she approaches painting, there is a cautiousness, like she is treading delicately in her surroundings in order to record her reaction to a place or collection of objects. With an emphasis on larger, more demanding brushstrokes; Holmes' landscapes in this show record a turning of the seasons in Cornwall's tumultuous land. Her landscapes are concerned with the changing of weather, colour, light and form -seemingly stripped back to basics. The tonal ranges are subtle yet together they capture the real essence of Cornish skies and seas. The still life paintings are an attempt to capture a transient yet recognisable locale with beautifully cultivated collections of flowers or objects. There is a sense of slowing down, of a deliberate application of material in order to represent and rediscover an emotional impression of her surroundings.

The work in this show is woven together with the threads of form, impression and rediscovery. All the artists use organic forms, producing individual impressions which are constantly rediscovering their sense of place in practice. The relationship between what we see and how we digest this is constantly changing, these artists are a reminder that every-day life can be seen and expressed in unaltered beauty and joy. Their work is their language that connects their head, heart and hand in an artfully anecdotal way of recording life.
