Martha Holmes: Coast to Coast

"As a whole , this collection is reflecting the two areas of landscape I work most with- the two coasts of Cornwall. Since graduating and painting down here full time, I've realised and understood which landscapes I am particularly drawn to. I've got to know Cornwall on a much deeper level, I appreciate and cherish it even more in all it's facets. This body of work, I wanted it to be very specific, using the two coasts as a base and then exploring this further displaying not only the two sides of Cornwall but also the way this translates into two sides of my painting practice through the differing physical landscape. The collection started with numerous works on paper, navigating and understanding the structures and colour palettes of certain places through plein-air studies. So to begin with, it felt very exploratorya way for me to map out my life in Cornwall through visual form and gather around me a language that could create this collection.

Having grown up on the North Coast, there is a nostalgic and childhood feel to the paintings referencing places like Porthtowan and Porthmeor. I work frequently in the Porthmeor studios and therefore West Penwith informs a large selection of the North Coast paintings. This group of the collection feature the rich ochres and lush greens of places like Zennor. Meanwhile the South Coast is where I am based now and where I studied. Durgan, The Helford, Falmouthall these places have become home to me. This side of the coast feels softer and the colours and structures reflected in these paintings translate this side of Cornwall. I have found myself grouping and identifying the physical places in Cornwall by my paintings now, by the colour palette, by the structures, the rock formations, the skies. There is a language forming between painting and place that feels really important to me.

This whole body of work has been a real opportunity for me to push the way that I paint. Scaling both up and down has forced me to be ambitious and figure out how to translate my painting style depending on the scale in which I am working. The exhibition also acts as a stopping point for me, to reflect on the work I have made and pause before moving on. I hope this exhibition gives an insight into the true way that I see and envisage Cornwall, that it pieces together my life here and you can see the relationships between the small and large works and between the sketches and the finished oils." - Martha Holmes May 2019

Martha graduated in 2018 with a BA in Graphic Design from Falmouth University. She now lives and works in Falmouth and is a landscape and still life painter. We have been working with Martha for 18 months and have been fortunate to watch her grow as a painter and artist. This new exhibition displays a complex comprehension of landscape painting and capturing Cornwall's true essence. Armed with an ambitious range of scales and her signature painterly style, this show sees Martha reflecting on the landscape in an informed and sensitive manner.
