Oil on paper
Beside The Wave
Alan has been painting professionally for over 15 years but has only recently been able to paint the landscape he loves full time, with a move to Cornwall in 2017. This body of work is a culmination of a committed period of time painting and with that has come a huge depth of development in his painterly approach and technique. As an artist, Alan is led by moment and landscape, this collection translates those pillars of practice into a visual identity. With huge sweeping waves and trickling streams, light peering through trees and dark thunder clouds; these paintings are awe inspiring yet intimate and convey the beauty of a landscape that is consistently changing and evolving like the artist himself.
"I have always found the natural world an inspiring and beautiful place. Whether it's the sky, the sea...wherever you look there is beauty and nature is an artist in her own right.
My latest collection of work takes inspiration from nature and her artwork. Surrounding us in Cornwall we have dramatic skies, powerful seas and desolate landscapes. I have been paying much more attention to the sea and the energy of wave formations, whether powerful and crashing or gently caressing the shore.
I have also been exploring new techniques with this work - still painting in oils, but combined with a thinning medium. I have adopted a wet on wet technique more associated with watercolour painting. Using this technique combined with a texture paste, you're never quite sure how it will turn out and as such the work takes on a life of it's own and creates unpredictable textural effects which I think reflects the ever-changing nature of the subject matter.
The end results are semi-abstract impressionist paintings with atmosphere and energy, that engage the viewer with something different every time."
