Alan Stratford: Braving The Elements

We are delighted to present a brand new collection of paintings by Alan Stratford, his third solo show with Beside The Wave. Alan's inspiration for his work is the Cornish coastline, which now lies right outside his front door, given that, having longed to live here for years, Alan finally made the move in 2017.

Since the move he's become increasingly experimental with his work, seeking to express the essence of what he sees. Meanwhile, his quirky titles like 'Not a day for hanging around' set the tone for his audience and invite us to see beyond what is immediately before us in the painted work itself.

"All I could do well at school was draw - and I loved to draw. I used to spend my evenings sitting in front of the TV at home, drawing portraits of famous actors from pictures in the radio times, or a still life of our Russell Hobbs kettle and an orange. Then I found out you could do this for a living! It was called a commercial artist in those days - it was Tom Good's former job in the TV sitcom 'The Good Life' - which is where, I think, I first dicovered it. This career path became even more appealing once I found out you didn't need to study any academic subjects, or indeed even take any A Levels.

So after leaving school at 16 I went straight onto an art foundation course for 2 years where, after discovering there was no money in fine art, I dreamed of becoming a commercial illustrator. Then I discovered Graphic Design which was a fledgling industry at this time, which led me on to Bristol Polytechnic to study for a BA Honours degree in Commercial Graphics. I had a ball for three years! The next 29 years were spent working my socks off and selling my soul to various design companies both in London and Bristol. I ran my own design company for 10 years, but still deep down I wanted to paint.

In 2008 when looking for a premises for the design company, I decided to combine this with my love of art and open a gallery at the same time. Gradually over the next 5 years the gallery took over my life and in 2013 we moved to a much larger premises. I turned my back on the world of graphic design to concentrate on running the gallery full-time and to paint. In 2017 after selling the gallery I made the move to Cornwall just to paint. Inspired by the beauty of the Cornish landscape and the everchanging drama of the sea and sky, I endeavour to create works which are both 'evocative and atmospheric'. I have so far secured representation with 4 galleries across Cornwall and have been exhibited at the Affordable Art Fair in Battersea and Hampstead.

I love to explore new subject matters and painting styles, either figurative or abstract, continually striving for the perfect balance of aesthetic appeal and artistic merit. " - Alan Stratford
