Amanda Hoskin: Time and Tide

Beside The Wave Gallery is delighted to be hosting a brand new collection by Amanda Hoskin, 'Time and Tide, A Year in Cornwall'. This show is inspired by the seasons. I wanted to paint the particular aspects of how the landscape changes through a year. Each season creates a mood or feeling, from the cold snowy fields of Zennor to the sublime wildflowers on the coastal path.

Benjamin Warner: So Fled the Night

Benjamin Warner: So Fled the Night

Benjamin Warner's latest collection will be centred around one of his favourite places to paint, Falmouth Docks. The Docks are on the Southern Shore of the Fal Estuary, the third largest natural harbour in the world and the deepest in Europe. Compositions appear as a boat slowly moves across the water, or the sun just appears over the horizon, it is no surprise that Warner has chosen to return to the iconic part of our local landscape.

Alan Stratford Artistic Nature

28th June - 18th July 2019

Alan Stratford Artistic Nature

Alan has been painting professionally for over 15 years but has only recently been able to paint the landscape he loves full time, with a move to Cornwall in 2017. This body of work is a culmination of a committed period of time painting and with that has come a huge depth of development in his painterly approach and technique. As an artist, Alan is led by moment and landscape, this collection translates those pillars of practice into a visual identity. With huge sweeping waves and trickling streams, light peering through trees and dark thunder clouds; these paintings are awe inspiring yet intimate and convey the beauty of a landscape that is consistently changing and evolving like the artist himself.

As Jacques Cousteau once said, The sea, once it casts its spell, holds one in its net of wonder forever and the spell of the sea has been the inspiration for this exhibition. In casting its 'net of wonder' our painters, jewellers and ceramicists have been inspired to create works in response to the ocean - from Chris Rigby's monumental cliffscapes, to Robert Jones' open seas and Richard Tuff's harboursides; from Reece Ingram's characterful sculptures to Paul Jacksons' seascape bowls; and from Sue Chadwick's 'balancing rocks' bracelets to Emily Nott-Bower's silver shell jewellery. In all the show is a wonderful celebration of the sea that has shaped our island heritage.

Martha Holmes: Coast to Coast

17th May - 6th June 2019

Martha Holmes: Coast to Coast

"As a whole , this collection is reflecting the two areas of landscape I work most with- the two coasts of Cornwall. Since graduating and painting down here full time, I've realised and understood which landscapes I am particularly drawn to. I've got to know Cornwall on a much deeper level, I appreciate and cherish it even more in all it's facets. This body of work, I wanted it to be very specific, using the two coasts as a base and then exploring this further displaying not only the two sides of Cornwall but also the way this translates into two sides of my painting practice through the differing physical landscape. The collection started with numerous works on paper, navigating and understanding the structures and colour palettes of certain places through plein-air studies. So to begin with, it felt very exploratorya way for me to map out my life in Cornwall through visual form and gather around me a language that could create this collection.

Sarah Wimperis: An Essence of Place

In our current climate, I believe art should be escapismart really does have so many roles and guises. I personally, want art to draw attention to the moment, drawing my attention. Perhaps art is an act of meditation, lingering over a glimpse or a feeling created by an effect of light. It's a fleeting thing that I try to think about and worship and make important by creating art. I paint because it is the way that I talk to myself, it's my own personal language, calming me down and making sense of my world. It's not profound or important it's just my fundamental way of communicating with myself.

Alan Stratford: The Tide is Turning

8th March - 4th April 2019

Alan Stratford: The Tide is Turning

Ahead of Alan Stratford's new show at Beside the Wave Gallery, we put some questions to this exceptional artist regarding this recent body of work...
Now that you've been living back in Cornwall for almost two years, do you notice a change in the way you approach making paintings? Where are some of your favourite hidden treasures in Cornwall?

Being in Cornwall has allowed me to paint full time which as a result means I spend more time in the outdoors chasing that inspiration; having said that, it has also been a huge learning curve becoming a full time painter. The level of output obviously increases but with this increase I have had to come to terms with learning to fail, not every painting is a masterpiece and never can be. In order to develop my skills and move forward, I have to try new things-different techniques, painterly styles, materials... this is why the latest work shows my exploration of using textured paste and paint thinners.
I spend a lot of time on both coasts in Cornwall, but I am still relatively new to the area and yet to find my truly special places. However much of my latest work takes inspiration from the North Coast where the Atlantic is rougher and more dramatic- Holywell Bay, Crantock Bay and Poly Joke Beach are just some of my favourite places. Oh and I love Bodmin Moor! It's so intense and filled with drama and the skies are simply fantastic!

Impression, Form, Rediscovery

An exciting group show featuring new paintings by Martha Holmes & Ruth Watkinson. We are delighted to be introducing Julia Florence's ceramics to the gallery.

Simplicity, in its most reverent and sacred form seems to hold centre stage in the work of all three of our artists for this upcoming show. Ruth Watkinson, Julia Florence and Martha Holmes all studied at Falmouth University and have undeniably been inspired by their time spent in this part of the world. These three female artists have a preoccupation with light, landscape and organic form; using their surroundings as a way of feeding an art practice that is continuously evolving yet grounded in a strong earthly manner.

Miles Heseltine: Through the Seasons

Miles Heseltine: Through the Seasons

Miles Heseltine can more often than not be found perched on a cliff top; pieces of charcoal strewn in the grass around him whilst he captures the landscape. His drawings range from studies in A3 sketchbooks to a monumental scale (the largest on record measuring over 3.5m in length). Paintings often start from these drawings, and in his newest canvases charcoal is clearly visible through impasto layers of oil.

Benjamin Warner: The Docks

Following his successful abstract collection earlier in the year, Ben found that his desire to paint the Falmouth Docks remained as strong as ever. Focused on places initimately known to Warner, these are atmospheric and delicate paintings. Form edges up to abstraction whilst being representative. The iconic shapes of the cranes at Falmouth Docks are silhouetted against the light - instantly recognisable, and sparingly discribed.

Andrew Tozer: The Helford River

"For my latest collection, I have produced paintings that explore my ongoing fascination with the Helford River, an area of outstanding natural beauty. Concerned with capturing the seasonal colours and constantly changing moods of this glorious landscape, I hope I have produced a collection that varies in feel. In each painting I have aimed to capture, as ever, a moment in time and therefore achieves a very different feel from the next; a blustery morning in early March, a sweltering afternoon in late July or a cool morning in June." - Andrew Tozer

Benjamin Warner: Abstract

2nd - 15th February 2018

Benjamin Warner: Abstract

Benjamin Warner is an artist renowned for his depictions of imposing coastal scenes, remote, inhabited and industrial, and spectacular urban landscapes. Painted at the beginning and end of the day in the half light of dawn and dusk, these works, reminiscent of Whistler, approach abstraction. Until now, however, Warner has remained on the threshold that stands between representation and abstraction; nevertheless, the gift of a number of unfinished panels painted by his art lecturer father (who had himself taken up abstract painting) has provided the springboard from which Warner felt able to explore his own ideas. Despite a number of the panels having little more than a colour ground or a touch of texture, they had a profound impact and gave Warner a starting point for his own creative journey, from figurative works, engrained in place, towards paintings that have been completely abstracted from their figurative roots.

Benjamin Warner: First Light

18th - 30th August 2017

Benjamin Warner: First Light

An exhibition of our new- and highly anticipated - collection of paintings by Benjamin Warner opens this week in our Cornwall gallery, with all of the works available to view now in our catalogue.
In this collection, Warner has returned to the Falmouth Docks, which have long been a source of inspiration. The interrelationships between the brightly lit ships and the reflections created in the half-light of dawn, are rendered with delicacy and courage. Warner is a masterful colourist and the balance he creates between representation and abstraction is finely judged. The exhibition also includes some of Cornwall's much loved areas- from Falmouth's beaches and the Carrick Roads, to the Camel Estuary: these are captivating atmospheric landscapes. This is truly one of the 'must see' collections of the summer.
The collection is on display in our gallery in Falmouth from 9.30am, Friday 18th August. All of the work within the show can also be arranged to be viewed in our gallery in Primrose Hill, London, by request or as part of our complimentary home visits throughout London and Cornwall.

Andrew Tozer: Fleeting Light

Andrew Tozer: Fleeting Light

"In this collection of paintings, I have been inspired by the breathtaking Cornish light in the summer season. No one day is the same, and capturing these specific fleeting moments has been a joy. The results I feel speak for themselves. Many of the scenes have been captured plein air, so as to seize a part of the day. Sometimes I will rush home to put the final touches to the paintings in the calm of the studio, other times meditating on the painting and adjusting things over a period of days or even weeks. Whatever is takes to make the painting work.

Miles Heseltine: Hillsides and Headlands

Miles Heseltine's reputation as a distinguished part of the contemporary Cornish art scene has been very well earnt. This artist is often found on monumental cliff tops with a colossal sheet of paper rolled out in front of him, stones used to anchor the corners to the rugged ground, working intuitively and quickly to capture a particular moment. His approach seeks out essences such as rhythm and suggestions of form, filtering what he sees in front of him to the awe-inspiring elements that have stopped him in his tracks during his daily walks. This inspiration is carried home to his studio and into his thickly layered paintings. The immediacy and energy from his process is distinctively evident throughout his work; with confidently applied brushstrokes, laden with oil paint, reliving the gestural sweeps of charcoal from those moments in the landscape.
This solo exhibition marks 10 years since the artist's inclusion in the ground-breaking exhibition 'Revolver' at the Penzance Art Gallery, grouping Miles with other young mid-career artists that together represented a new confidence and attitude in the contemporary Cornish art scene.

Andrew Tozer: A Painter's World

Andrew Tozer was born in Cornwall in 1974, inspired by the materials found around his parent's house he started drawing at a very young age. By fifteen he was sure that becoming a painter was his true calling, and at 19 he moved to the capital to study at Westminster University, and then on to Central Saint Martins. It was here that he first began to paint outdoors, taking a small sketchbook and minimal painting materials he would visit Trafalgar Square, Richmond and Kew Gardens, taking in the urban landscape that surrounded him.
