"The fact that these waterways are industrial is important to me. These rivers are navigable and commercial rather than idyllic and foliage-clad, and it is the history and romance of the Thames and the Seine that has provided such a pull to me creatively. When I start a painting, I have an idea of where I want it to go. I feel my way around the subject, knocking it into shape, and in the process, the painting will take on a life of its own: sometimes something quite figurative, like the Houses of Parliament will emerge. Here the oranges played off against the greens and the architecture massed together; in the process, much more detail than I expected emerged. At other times, abstract, painterly, atmospheric spaces will materialise, and these I feel are more immutable: unchanging, enduring images created out of a moment in time. Importantly, I feel that this collection reflects the fact that I am beginning to embrace who I am as a painter; as a result, my conscious concept of 'contemporary art' is, I think, being challenged by the persistence of my subconscious 'language' of painting. It would appear, then, that this language is ultimately as unique- and apparently as unchangeable - as my fingerprints or my voice. In allowing this simply to be, I am finding myself a little more at ease in my work, but letting a painting go and allowing it to be complete remains a huge - although perhaps inevitable challenge to me."
