| Emma
performs the role of hunter-gatherer, collecting together all
the ingredients for her compositions. She explains, "My
aim is to end up with my gathered ingredients - glimpses of
journeys, patterns from familiar settings and objects collected
along the way - converging to create an image that communicates
the richness of the original source of inspiration." The
pictures are then built gradually, layer upon layer and may
be heavily edited prior to resolution. Intricately detailed
areas are occasionally obliterated; then the essential elements
that are to be retained are revealed again by scratching through
the covering paint. This painstaking way of working is in fact,
vital to the finished quality of the work, as the energy of
the painting's surface is generated by residual clues as to
what lies beneath. |
