"I
loved the throwing process from the moment I first pushed
the pedal on the wheel. The transformation of the wet clay
from a static firm ball to a loose and flowing object, reminded
me of the first time I saw my drawings move on screen. My
ceramics are based on classic English design with a twist,
sometimes with a touch of oriental styling. They are simple
and useable forms but pleasing to the eye. I love the idea
of movement in my ceramics and use the form, colours and painted
subject to suggest this.
From
an early age I always loved to draw and paint, I would copy
drawings of birds and fish. I spent most of my early childhood
on the Cornish coast, exploring rock pools and looking under
stones. Finding great satisfaction in the study of small fish
and crabs, my love of nature also transpired into my early
drawings. I have always loved birds and admire the drawings
found in places such as the old RSPB magazines. It is a tragedy
that traditional hand drawn illustration is in danger of being
lost.
In
my most recent body of work I have been trying to re-capture
my life's experiences and journeys. I wanted to combine all
the emotions and feelings of the north coast of Cornwall with
childhood memories of classic bird illustrations. Mixing simple
shapes and fluid oriental brush strokes I have tried to create
a clean subtle feel to the pots and decoration. The confidence
I have gained from making ceramics has encouraged me to start
painting. I use broken fragments of pots to create surface
texture on the canvas. I enjoy working with both medias and
I feel that they will continue to influence one another."
