.2010 Summer Newsletter

Easter was very busy in Falmouth this year, with many people choosing to stay in the UK due to a combination of lovely weather and volcanic ash wreaking havoc on our airspace! As a result we were delighted to welcome a lot of our regular customers back down to Cornwall early, as well as seeing an increase in new visitors. Our Easter exhibition was an ideal opportunity for everyone to view the broad range of artists that we represent, and pre-empt some of the solo exhibitions that we will be hosting over the course of 2010.
In particular Simon Stooks' return to the gallery, with a collection of paintings of boats over Flushing roof tops, proved extremely popular (there will further new work from Simon in our mixed show at Christmas). In addition Andrew Giddens' work once again sold very quickly. He also expanded his presence in the gallery by introducing a set of new limited edition prints, details of which can be found on our website.
Following on from this in May, Andrew Tozer exhibited a wonderful collection of Falmouth scenes. 'Come Rain or Shine' captured the harbour throughout the seasons, providing many images evocative of misty dawns and sparkling sunlight over traditional gaff rigged boats bobbing in the harbour. Locals and visitors alike were very impressed by Andrew's spontaneity with paint and his capacity to capture the light at all times of day and in all weathers. If you missed out on seeing the work in the gallery the collection is still on our website.
Finally to end Spring and see us into Summer, June saw Richard Tuff's annual solo exhibition. Those familiar with Richard's work will instantly recognise his style, but as a departure from his most popular subject of Cornish harbours, this year he focussed on the hillside towns and villages of Tuscany. With rich, warm Mediterranean colours and intimate views of street cafes alongside terracotta houses and rooftops this was a delightful and unique exhibition.
July marks the busiest month to date in Beside the Wave's 20 year history, with three exhibitions starting in one month. We are fortunate to have welcomed John Raynes (RI) to the gallery over the past couple of years and are very proud to host his biennial solo exhibition opening on 2nd July. His primary interest is, as ever, in searching out salient shapes and seeking structure, form and pattern within the landscape.
His paintings include a variety of landscapes, from waves surging into the cliffs of the North coast (including Porthtowan and Bassets Cove) in vibrant colour palettes, to a more subtle monotonal treatment that explores the dramatic play of light across the harbours of the south coast, including Falmouth and the iconic view of the church tower overlooking the pier at Porthleven.

Alongside John's work we are delighted to have a new collection of jewellery by Emily Nixon, winner of Best Maker in the South West at the Contemporary Craft Fair, Bovey Tracey 2009. The sculptural forms in Emily's jewellery are inspired directly by the Cornish land and seascapes surrounding her studio. Her statement necklaces integrate textured silver nuggets alongside large chunks of semi-precious stones, creating unique pieces that will be the envy of jewellery hoarders universally!
Following immediately on from this show is a special collection of paintings by Emma Dunbar (from 17th - 24th July). As always she will provide a wonderful touch of exuberance to the start of the summer. Inspired by the decorative qualities in everyday things she works mainly on board in acrylic, occasionally incorporating collage with gold and silver leaf. In particular for this collection Emma has focussed on layers of summer and spring flowers, frothing over her unique and personal collection of individual cups and vases.
Finally as July ends our mixed Summer show begins, with many of our gallery artists contributing to the exhibition which opens on 31st July and continues until 1st September. From the dramatic and dynamic, to detailed and delicate, the exhibition covers many different aspects of our cornish landscapes. Artists will include Roy Goodman, Miles Heseltine, Mike Hindle, Amanda Hoskin, Emma Jeffryes, Alasdair Lindsay, Andrew Tozer and Sarah Wimperis.

Myles Oxenford has exhibited nationally, including the Mall Galleries and the Royal Cornwall Museum, and last year won the West Country prize at the Discerning Eye exhibition. Inspired by the subtleties of the ever changing light around Cornwall, his first solo show with Beside The Wave which opens on 4th September celebrates his first decade as a professional painter, and explores the artistic themes of light, reflection and shadow in both landscape and still life.

Full information about all our exhibitions can be seen on our website: www.beside-the-wave.co.uk, and catalogues are available from a week prior to each exhibition. We hope you enjoy reading about the wonderful mix of shows that we have this year. Please contact us if you would like to receive further information about any of our future exhibitions.
