Preview: 6pm, Friday, 8th June.
Exhibition continues until 20th June.
A blaze of
vibrant colour, full of the warmth of Southern France, is about
to fill Falmouth's Beside The Wave Gallery. Artist, Richard Tuff,
primarily known for his colourful depiction's of Cornwall, made
a visit to Provence last September and this new exhibition of
forty paintings displays the amazing fruits of his travels.
Richard's
last one man show at the gallery was based primarily around the
subject of his remote North Cornish cottage and garden, and showed
personal glimpses of his home in a very intimate and private way,
giving us an insight into the tranquil life of this charming and
gentle man. Of significance was the reaction Richard received
towards his lovely studies of pots and buckets of spring flowers
on window sills and benches around his home. It is now this theme
that we can see carried through into his new French series.

Geraniums
in the Luberon
360mm x 485mm, gouache on paper

An accomplished
colourist Richard has welcomed the challenge of a new palette
and fresh subjects and produces a series of absolutely charming
works combining glorious Mediterranean colours and finding lovely
intimate scenes of ancient streets in Proven¨al towns. Now Mediterranean
terracotta pots bursting with scarlet geraniums and groups of
succulent architectural palms and agaves replace the English daffodils
and other flowers. These rambling threads of festive flora frame
sun drenched facades with weather worn painted shutters and time
aged walls which radiate in shades if ochres and pink tinged hues,
the ever so welcoming doorways invite the viewer in with vines
and all manner of climbers trailing around their frames. These
are wonderful relaxing pictures that resonate with hazy days of
warmth, and place memories of long relaxing holiday moments that
are so very precious in our minds.

This new collection
is of particular significance for those collectors who have followed
Richard's progress over the last eighteen years and it will provide
an excellent opportunity for those eager to maintain prominent
examples from his key collections in theirs. As with many of his
previous collections from foreign travels the gallery director
Lesly Heather anticipates a strong response in terms of sales.
There will
also be a small group of additional Cornish paintings that Richard
has been working on during the last twelve months to accompany
the French work.
All of the
paintings from the exhibition will be available on the gallery
website from 6pm on Thursday 7th June to coincide with the opening
of the private view. A full colour catalogue of the paintings
from the show will also be available by request.
