Beside
the Wave Gallery is celebrating the advent of summer with
new collections of work from some of Cornwall's most collectable
and popular artists.
Amanda
Hoskin's
first collection since her solo show in March is inspired
by a leisurely, solitary sailing trip around Mylor. Soft spring
blossoms, tranquil blue waters and lush grasses combine to
give a vivid impression of springtime on the river.
Emma
Jeffryes' fresh and vibrant studies of St. Ives sing with
energy and optimism. She has captured iconic views of the
town in her distinctive style; the sweep of the cerulean blue
bay framed with frothy white cow parsley, a glimpse of Godrevy
lighthouse in the distance beyond the harbour, the golden
curve of Porthmeor beach all evoking the warmth of Summer.
Andrew
Tozer, working mainly en plein air, has been studying
the views on the well trodden journey from his studio in Penryn
to the gallery in Falmouth; from the old clocktower at Penryns'
town centre, along Greenbank looking towards Flushing and
on to Falmouth's industrial port. The old High Street in Falmouth
with it's quirky buildings and glimpses through to the sea
will also feature.
Amongst
John Raynes' collection for the show will be a stunning
'contre jour' study from Falmouth across to Flushing. A view
across the river looks in to the dazzling morning light. The
dark shapes of the boats on the water enveloped by the golden
glow of the rising sun.
Roy
Goodman has depicted Sennen in West Cornwall in beautifully
balanced compositions using a slightly more naturalistic palette
than seen in recent work. The wild landscape rendered in mauves,
greens and pale primrose yellow complements the turquoise
and white stone cottages dotted throughout.
Miles
Heseltine continues to develop as a fascinating artist
to watch. Also inspired by West Cornwall, his studies of Treen
Cliff and the surrounding area are rendered in his distinctive
mix of painting and drawing. He combines smoky black charcoal
with thick buttery oil paint to make fresh and dynamic compositions.
Mike
Hindle, inspired by the warmth of the summer light, has
produced strongly coloured vistas. Large solid blocks and
bands of paint make up an almost abstract celebration of colour
but for the inclusion of a mark that one reads as a figure
in the distance or a glowing sun sinking in the sky.
Ted
Dyer will, as always, delight collectors with his tranquil
paintings of an idyllic Cornwall. A beautiful study of Falmouth
bay is bathed in hazy golden light. The foreground of Cornish
wildflowers lead the eye to a calm blue sea dotted with white
sails, the muted silhouette of Pendennis Castle beyond.
An
eagerly anticipated collection of still life studies from
Simon Stooks completes the fantastic line up for Summer
09. There will of course, be work available by all of the
gallery's artists along with ceramics, jewellery and limited
edition prints.
