Summer Exhibition 2010
Opening 10am Saturday 31st July 2010
Exhibition continues until Wednesday 1st September

Beside the Wave gallery is delighted to celebrate the welcome arrival of Spring 2010 with an exciting and diverse exhibition of fresh work from a selection of our gallery artists.

Debbie George has produced a collection of delightful still lifes celebrating her passion for wild flowers and cherished objects. The landscape is seen from domestic interiors through decorated windows. The outside is brought indoors via spring flowers; buttercups, daisies and forget-me-nots displayed in much loved pots and vases.

Andrew Giddens' beautiful winter beach scenes evoke a dramatic stormy Cornwall. A dark jade green wave curls towards the shore under a vast clear blue sky and we are treated to the rare sight of snow dusted fields in the distance.

Roy Goodman's collection has been inspired by the quintessentially Cornish trees and cottages that punctuate the landscape. He has taken advantage of the past few months to explore the elaborate beauty of bare winter branches before they are covered again by new leaves.

Mike Hindle makes a very welcome contribution to the exhibition with his closely observed views of Falmouth, taking in all the essential elements of the town from the docks to the old winding streets. His unparalled use of colour and skill at capturing the effects of light on the landscape show Falmouth at it's very best.

Simon Stooks now shares his time between Cornwall and France and his contributions to the show are a mixture of influences and inspiration from both places. Included are quirky and charismatic observational studies of roosters, regarded by many cultures as symbols of the sun and of resurrection and so a perfect subject for an Easter exhibition. In complete contrast an unusual scene depicting a gaff rig glimpsed between rooftops juxtaposes thickly painted, almost abstract blocks of colour with areas of scratched sgraffito drawing creating a fascinating surface for the eye to study.

400mm x 400mm, oil on canvas board

Myles Oxenford's atmospheric cloud study depicts a huge sky over Falmouth bay in his distinctive painterly style. His gestural brush marks almost abstract the composition into pure shape and colour. It is a small painting yet it suggests a vast space.

200mm x 200mm, oil on board

Sarah Wimperis' exquisitely painted studies depict the ever changing mood of the rivers and creeks around Falmouth. Icy, tranquil waters populated only by a pair of gliding swans contrast with river beds bustling with activity in cockling season.

It is fascinating to see such different collections within a single exhibition and it is an inspirational and energising beginning to a new year of exciting work from all of our artists.

The exhibition opens at 10 am on Good Friday 2nd April and will run until Wednesday 5th May.
