Danny Markey

Danny Markey was born and lived in Cornwall until he moved to London to study at Camberwell School of Art, graduating in 1987. In the same year he received first prize in the South Bank Picture Show at the Festival Hall in London and won the Richard Chamberlain Memorial Prize at the Camberwell School of Art Painting Competition. In 1993 he was a prize winner at the London Annual Show at the Barbican, London; in 2007 he was again nominated prize winner, this time at the Discerning Eye Mall Galleries show. Since 1987 Danny has lived and painted in London, Wales, Tokyo, Cornwall and California and in 2001 he was elected a member of the Royal West of England Academy. He has been represented in Cork Street for nearly 20 years, during which time he has had eight solo shows. His work is represented in leading private collections nationally and internationally.

Biography

Danny Markey's paintings extract a colourful and spontaneous simplicity from the landscape and from his immediate surroundings. Travel inspires him and he has lived and painted in Cornwall, Japan and USA.
"For me, painting and the choice of subject is impulsive. However, I do try to avoid the picturesque and look at the unregarded yet common aspects of the world around me. In the end what matters is what you make of it in paint but I seem to need a place, a landscape to get me going and the little epiphanies that trigger ideas for my paintings can occur in the most ordinary settings."
