Wendy's work is a response to the visual and sensual elements of nature that shape her everday life. rhythms, textures, patterns, weather, emotions; inspiration is infinte. Wendy is not defined by a specific style or technique but instead chooses to interpret ideas through mark making and decorating methods.
"Having grown up near the coast in the South Hams of Devon I have always loved the sea and a lot of my work reflects this. I have developed my new work because I wanted to experience a technique that has more immediacy as a contrast to the therapeutic, meditative process of coiling which I have enjoyed for many years.
I began using torn clay slabs to build my rock formation sculptures informed by my drawings and torn, painted and textured paper collages of rock patterns and shapes of the Cornish coast. I didn't feel that the impact of these sculptural pieces translated so well when scaled down and so I went on to develop the smaller slab built pots still using part torn, clay slabs but with a flat surface to be decorated with a more pictorial although abstract decoration taken from my drawings and paintings. I feel the three styles fit together as a body of work as the essential inspiration is always the same the sea and coast, particularly from Cornwall and Devon. I use the same pallet of slips, underglazes and oxides and fire the work to the same temperature giving the work a unified look despite different making methods. Whether a statement piece or one of the smaller slab pots all my work has a quiet presence. " - Wendy Farley July 2020.
