Biography

Whilst studying at the Royal College of Art I made a number of painting trips to St Ives. Even though I studied textile design, painting was always of great importance to me, in itself and as a source of inspiration for my designs. For the first couple of years after graduating I worked as a freelance designer but continued making painting trips to St Ives.
Being pleasantly surprised by the reception that my work was beginning to have and feeling uninspired with living in London, I moved to St Ives in November 1997. This marked the beginning of an unexpected change in direction of my career. I felt I could spend less time on design work and more on painting. It wasn't long before I found myself in a position of being able to concentrate solely on painting.
This was an exciting period and I worked steadily for a few years. With the arrival of two children between 2002 and 2004 I had a complete break from painting. At the time it didn't feel I was missing it, but after having been able to start again, I've realised what a big part of me it is. It actually feels enormously refreshing to have had the break and I'm now working with a renewed passion and vigour!

To begin with I enjoyed working directly from life, be it from a cliff top or in amongst the boats in the harbour. Thus being able to make an immediate response to the surroundings, which I felt maintained a certain freshness in the work.
The challenge for me is to capture the beauty of the sea and surroundings, as well as creating works that are individual, fresh, alive and considered in terms of form, colour and space. Ten years on from first discovering St Ives, I am just as captivated by it, but I'm beginning to spend more time working on ideas in the studio. I'm almost finding I can work more freely and be more experimental this way. I will always continue to work directly from life, but feel the studio work is adding an interesting dimension to my work as a whole.
