Andrew Tozer ‘Homage to Spring’

As we edge closer to warmer months the landscapes around us transform from dull grey and oppressive brown to electrifying greens, blues, and a myriad of springtime colours. When painting outside Andrew begins by applying the most inspiring colours first. This collection perfectly captures these lustful moments as the weather offers glimpses of the warmth to come. In many of the pieces soft cool tones are juxtaposed by flashes of vibrant colour. Whilst other works offer exuberant and extensive palettes, enveloping the scene in bright and playful colours that will transport you to glorious sunshine days along the coast.

From known scenes of the Helford and delicate depictions of Andrew’s wife in their tranquil garden to rarer views of the Pandora Inn and domestic still lifes. The versatility of this collection, from subject to palette, is what really sets it apart. Andrew has also enjoyed the use of oil paints which has resulted in pieces feeling rather more dreamlike as the colours blend and meld. Soft ethereal marks flutter across the sky in a far more delicate manner than with the use of acrylic. The acrylic pieces feel fearless in their use of brash colour and definitive marks whilst the oil paintings depict hazier scenes with earthier tones complimenting the vast array of colour. These works are reminiscent of Monet and Matisse with vivacious landscapes occasionally interspersed by gliding abstract figures. It is clear Tozer finds overwhelming beauty in nature and approaches each piece with both an understanding of traditional techniques, that are heavily influenced by the present day, as well as a fresh contemporary application of colour.

With a focus on capturing light, whether it be shadows cast along the banks at Gweek on a sunny day or reflections dancing across the water. Needless to say, this a celebration of Spring that highlights the ever-developing nature of Andrew’s work.
