“The work in this show is inspired by the landscape of West Penwith. Recently I have even preoccupied with two main themes. There is one series of paintings that suggest open moorland. These are concerned with a specific place, visible from a window in the place that I work. There is a strong element of direct observation in these.

The second series depicts trees and woodland, and also alludes to the local area, they refer ,to the landscape less literally. The lighting in these paintings as as expression of mood is important and I have sought inspiration with this from some of the historic landscape painting in Northern Europe, such as that by Rembrandt, Van Ruysdael and some Scandinavian painters of the late 19th to early 20th century.” – Miles Heseltine
