We’re absolutely delighted to present Nicola Mosley’s second solo collection at the gallery. Her fascination continues with the ever changing skies outside her studio window. This collection is the result of Nicola’s habitual approach to perfecting her craft. The varying moods are distinctly executed with very subtle changes in palette. Brooding taupe and umber offer the contrasting backdrop to the ethereal pink clouds dancing across the sky. The gentle dusky blue scenes counter the more sensual pieces with calming subtlety, the painting equivalent to a breath of fresh air.
‘After many months in the making, there is a feeling of anticipation when a new collection of work comes together for an exhibition. It’s a long process to this final stage, when all the work has been dropped off at the framers and the last of the preparations are in process. Then finally, to see all the work exhibited in the gallery is very exciting.
This new collection of 25 paintings focuses on coastal skies and their changing colours from dawn to dusk. My studio is perched on a hill overlooking Falmouth harbour. It’s exposed to all the elements that the ever changing Cornish weather brings us. At times it’s so beautifully tranquil and calm, and at others very atmospheric with dramatic storms and cloud formations rolling in over the bay, and being surrounded by all this has had a significant influence on my recent work. Growing up I was often told that I always had my head in the clouds – I’m now very happy to be painting them!’ Nicola Mosley, May 2023
