Nicola Mosley – Fleeting Moments

April 29, 2022 - May 20, 2022

Fleeting Moments

Nicola Mosley’s practice continuously evolves despite her subject matter remaining consistent. With a tremendous view across Falmouth harbour, from her studio set in the luscious hills of Flushing, Nicola continues to produce work daily. In her last collection we saw varying palettes, from cool to rich, overlapping to form the layers of sea, land and sky. Diaphanous marks span the width of the sky to depict large translucent clouds. However, this new collection offers works that are far richer and assured. Dark and intense skies that have been infused with countless pigments and juxtaposed by either a blanket of ethereal marks or an isolated yet defined cloud that appears to glide across the canvas.

Nicola’s work is rather spontaneous with her process requiring no preliminary sketches but rather countless photographs. From this she collates enough inspiration to create scenes that, despite being works of fiction, perfectly capture the essence of the Cornish coast. The works mimic the feeling of tranquillity that so often arises when looking out across the silken surface of Falmouth harbour whilst the sultry tones of the evening sky reflect upon the water. Bright streaks swoop across the dark plains of the earth which offers the awareness of Nicola’s hand in the process of making these delicate and considered paintings. These marks are created and erased at great speed until Nicola’s intuition is satisfied with the perfect suggestion of land meeting water.

Nicola’s primary focus is colour. This body of work has been heavily inspired by the sumptuous red and pinks of dusk and dawn. Fiery orange hues break through the grey as if it were an act of defiance, whilst in other pieces the softer pink offers gentle relief from the black ground below. Nicola’s ability to capture these fleeting moments and enabling them such gravity whilst implementing her abstracted and paired-back style is a testament to her continued experimentation and wealth of experience. Creating paintings of such emotive breadth in so few marks due to Nicola’s eye for detail and innate love for the landscape she is depicting.

“After many months in the making, there is a feeling of anticipation when a new collection of work comes together for a show. It’s a long process to this final stage, when all the work has been dropped off at the framers and the last of the preparations are in process. Then finally, to see all the work exhibited in the gallery is very exciting.

This new collection of 21 paintings focuses on coastal skies and the colours of early mornings, dusk and the silver light of a winter’s day. My studio is perched on a hill overlooking a harbour – it’s exposed to all the elements that the ever changing Cornish weather brings. At times it’s very atmospheric, seeing dramatic storms rolling in over the bay, and being surrounded by all this has had a significant influence on my recent work.”
