The Sound of the Sea

May 31 @ 10:00 am - June 19 @ 5:00 pm

Amy Albright

“My latest paintings are based around time spent on The Helford River. I live on the North coast of Cornwall and perhaps the yearn for trees encroaching the river is due to my love of growing up splashing about in the River Fowey. I continue to be inspired by the natural patterns, the way the tide ebbs and flows leaving impressions and lines to discover. The play of light on the water is mesmerising and a challenge to capture but I enjoy using the paint in a fluid manner, layering and layering to capture the essence of the sunlight bouncing on the water.
I have been enjoying working on aluminium, the oil paint glides over the surface like silk, this is a perfect surface for playing the with light, carefully allowing the metal to shimmer through the layers of paint in particular areas. In these, the sky and my studying of clouds have become the focus, enjoying that golden glow that the winter skies in Cornwall bring.”

“When painting, I think a lot about light. How light illuminates the water, the clouds and the land. I am drawn to the drama, the contrasts, the colour shifts that light creates. The shifting light that occurs in a single day from sunrise to sunset, from one day to the next, from one season to another. It is this fluctuating light, changing, multifaceted and full of illuminating colour that I see everyday, that is so inspirational to me. This is at the forefront of my work, what I hope to capture; the layers and emotion that light conjures within land, sky and sea.”

Exploring the Essence of Cornwall

“The inspiration behind this series of new paintings is my return to this beautiful coastline experiencing it all weathers. My brush strokes and mark making portray the energy of the land and sea where one day the tranquil sky seems to merge seemlessly with the water; the finding of a secluded cove where the waters shimmer with the light of the sun lull you to pause; to the energy that comes from a spring storm, feeling the raw power of the elements. My palette captures the vibrant hues of spring; the essence of renewal and vitality.

Embracing the wild beauty of the elements, this is a journey through the ever-changing wonder of this land.”
