Beside The Wave
"A contemplative collection to escape the bewildering tumult of the uncertain times we find ourselves in."
'Fail we may, Sail we must'. The collection has been inspired as ever by the artist's local landscape and his desire to produce timeless paintings.
Each time a collection is released by Warner the excitment is palpable. The title of this series was inspired by a tattoo emblazoned upon the arm of one of Warner's late favourite DJs, Warner learnt the phrase had been told to him by a young trawlerman. The aplomb attitude of the Cornish and their determination to simply get on with the job-in-hand is comparable to the work ethic of Warner. To him a painting can feel on the brink of failure until one simple element can unify the depiction and the work can be considered 'finished'. This laboriuous and considered approach utimatley results in paintings that capture the quintessence of the Cornish coast through earthy tones and hazy marks.
Warner's ability to depict Cornwall, with a strong focus on light and shadow rather than form, is incredibly evocative and ensures they create an immediate emotive response. The use of cool and warm tones allows the viewer the capacity to percieve the warmth of the sun setting on the Helford or the damp cool air of the Falmouth Docks. With glimpses of light shining from the boats floating in the indistinguishable slate grey sea and sky to blinding white and terracotta hues overwhelming the canvas.
Warner's paintings capture the essence of this county, the beauty of its transitional and tempremental weather, as well as the enduring passion the people of Cornwall feel for their home.
